Calculating time zones is simple and involves adding or subtracting an hour for every 15 degrees of longitude.

There are six time zones in the US main country. The 50 US states are spread across the six standard time zones. With dependencies (inhabited and uninhabited), however, the total count comes to 11 time zones.

There are 24 regions (Time Zones) around the world with a time difference of one hour. This system has been adopted internationally by setting the total time difference around the world as 24 hours. Further, Daylight Saving Time (DST) is individually adopted in countries and regions.

The earth spins through 360 degrees in 24 hours, meaning that in one hour the earth spins through (360÷24=)15 degrees. This means that, technically, as you travel around the earth, each 15 degrees of longitude difference in the location of places means that they should have a time difference of one hour.

In the United States, time is divided into nine standard time zones covering the states, territories and other US possessions, with most of the country observing daylight saving time (DST) for approximately the spring, summer, and fall months.

The country that is furthest behind in time is American Samoa, an unincorporated territory of the United States. It is located in the Pacific Ocean and is part of the U.S. territory of Samoa. American Samoa observes the time zone known as "UTC-11," which is 11 hours behind Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).

Sir Sanford Fleming, who worked as an engineer for Canadian railways, knew this problem firsthand when he missed a train in 1876. This experience gave him the idea for a standard time, with hourly variations according to different zones around the world.

To split all regions of the Earth into 24 time zones, we divide longitude by 15 degrees to calculate the exact time zone in hours. For instance: At 75º west longitude, we calculate the time zone by dividing 75 degrees by 15 degrees.

Specifically, the zones are spaced 15 degrees apart, and each time zone differs from its adjacent time zone by one hour (earlier or later).

Time zones are another arbitrary societal choice, like the origin point of the Prime Meridian. They are based on longitude and defined by Earth's rotation, which completes a full circle (360 degrees) each day (24 hours). Each hour then, Earth rotates through 360/24 = 15° of longitude: the width of one time zone.
