Have you ever found yourself in an unexpected role or situation but realised you were 100% prepared because of your past experiences? The Unexpected Rise of Precision PodcastingWho knew that banging on drums at 15 would lead me here? Music was my lifeblood – a hobby, outlet, and social haven. Bands with friends fueled my teenage years, and a dream of making music a career propelled me towards an honours degree in Audio Production. The natural career path unfolded: live sound, studio engineering, digitising dusty tape archives, and mastering albums. I honed my craft on artistic projects, contributing to dozens of studio albums and working with iconic UK catalogues – from Elton John to The Who.But life takes unexpected turns. London's music scene gave way to a return to New Zealand and the entrepreneurial spirit. My first business, 'Overnight Audio', capitalised on the time difference, offering swift turnaround audio production for my London contacts. I even lent my voice to commercials, audiobooks, and events, winning an award for a voiceover campaign! Then, podcasts entered the picture. Podcast editing jobs started trickling in, gradually morphing into a steady stream I couldn't ignore. The episodes I edited gained popularity, some even hitting the #1 spot on charts across the globe! It dawned on me – I was a podcast engineer. Unforeseen yet perfectly aligned with my experience in speaking, recording, and audio engineering. It wasn't just about editing; it was about helping clients create & capture great audio content too.Today, delving into this weird world through the podcasts I edit is an intrinsic part of my day. Life seems to know what it’s doing sometimes.Want to make a podcast people will listen to? My course covers everything you need to go from your head to their headphones, without the crickets. I had a...challenging...edit yesterday, and it got me thinking - what’s your biggest cringe when it comes to noises? Gum chewing? Teeth sucking? Throat clearing? Mouth breathing? If you don’t have an audio cringe you are blessed with perfect peace as you walk the earth. For everyone else, it’s an auditory minefield out there. 🍿The sound of someone behind you in the theatre, struggling to open their Maltesers during the movie's most poignant scene.🫁The visceral shudder at the person behind you at the checkout snorting, sniffing and coughing the contents of their lungs.👀The incessant jet-ski buzzing around an otherwise peaceful beach - my favourite 😂 .And that’s out in real life - where audio has space to dissipate. In your headphones, however, it can be too much to bear. Every sound highlighted and amplified into your poor eardrums. This. Is why.Audio is so important. In the world outside your headphones, if you hear a noise that unsettles you, you just leave. The world inside our headphones is just the same. If the noise is unsettling or distracting, we just go somewhere else. If you want to take up residence in the real estate between people’s ears (their minds) then you have to give the ears something nice.If you don’t make your podcast audio an enjoyable and smooth experience, people will just turn you off. It doesn’t matter how good your content is - this is an audio medium. Listeners want enjoyable audio, and that's why I do what I do!Go on! Tell me you most hated sound!

How I swam with crocodiles in Mexico & kept my legs...(or, how to tell a story that captures your listeners)I’m not a thrill seeker. Well, I guess I did put my wife on the back of a scooter and hurtle through the Mexican jungle in the pitch black night at 70 km/hr in shorts and jandals. But I’m not an adrenaline junkie. And I don’t swim with crocodiles…normally. We had the scooter, so of course we didn't take a taxi. We were late, hence the speed. We did remember bug spray and togs—essentials for a night swim in bioluminescence.Bioluminescence is water that glows. When we saw tours in Puerto Escondido, we were all in.One exhilarating scooter ride later, we were sitting on plastic chairs under a giant 'bioluminescence' sign. After waiting 30 minutes, we were led through mangroves, donned lifejackets, and boarded a boatFinally, we were off making waves on the still water - no moon, only the light of a single torch flashing back and forth over the mangroves lining the side of the river. Strange. The boat motored on. Our driver speaking in Spanish, explaining the bioluminescence, maybe other things - we don’t know, our Spanish was basic at best. The engine cuts. Silence... SPLASH! Our skipper is overboard!“I guess it’s time for the swim!” Ruth and I jumped in, as did 6 of the 9 passengers. “why aren’t they coming in?” we thought. Maybe they forgot their togs. The water was warm and magical, a million bubbles of glowing plankton highlighted our every movement. We felt like superheroes! After 30 minutes, apparently I was the last back on the boat. Weird. I could have sworn there was someone just behind me. Back on land, they were selling souvenir key rings of turtles, crocodiles, and flamingos. That should have been our first clue. But none the wiser, we white-knuckled our way home on the scooter to collapse on the couch grinning at the awe-filled experience. I decided to google the place we had just gone to, usually something I do before an experience. My stomach dropped. The lagoon we just swam in was home to an estimated 500 crocodiles.A woman was attacked, and lost a leg, on a similar boat tour only 2 years ago. *OH sh*t*. My jaw dropped and I showed Ruth what I’d just discovered. We couldn’t believe it - was that the presence I felt behind me as I climbed on the boat? How were we allowed to swim there? Were we in danger? I shuddered at the thought. Two weeks later we were on another boat, in another lagoon, seeing more crocodiles - but this time in the daylight, no swimming, and I only touched its tail. (!)What crazy stories of luck and danger do you have? How do you integrate your life experiences into your podcast? Listeners love the human element - share something real!

Great to get out of the studio yesterday for an audio optimisation session with Simon, Natalie and Jon @ Pro Clima NZ Ltd. This graphic posted yesterday by Matty Lovell about the O-Studio Podcast is the perfect example of how powerful podcasting (consistently) can be for your business. When they started the show they were focused on a limited run, with a 'see how it goes' approach. That quickly changed and now we're on episode 24 - the results speak for themselves. I guess it also helps that Matty, Sophie & Tim are all naturals, and do a fantastic job each week!

As usual I'm terrible at taking photos in the moment 😆 But yesterday was a fantastic day at Fieldays. I haven't attended as a 'punter' before, having only been behind the scenes back in my catering days while studying 20 years ago, and I had such a great time. Most importantly it was amazing to catch up with some wonderful people - Kate Sarah Webber (thanks for the photo 😉), Blake Holgate, Ben Chapman-Smith, Bryan Gibson and Andy Whitson, who isn't on LinkedIn?#fieldays #waikato
