The SAP provides the employer with recommendations for education/treatment. After the driver completes the education/ treatment, the SAP re-evaluates the driver to determine compliance and establish a follow-up testing plan. The driver must be sent for an RTD test by his or her current employer.

A SAP program generally stays on your record for five years. This timeframe can be longer if you stop your safety-sensitive job for a period of time and, as a result, stop receiving DOT tests. In this circ*mstance, the five-year clock halts until you are employed in a safety-sensitive position again.

WHAT IS THE RETURN-TO-DUTY (RTD) PROCESS? The Return-to-Duty (RTD) test is often given after a donor has violated a company's drug and alcohol policy. If the violation occurs in a safety-sensitive position (for example oil and gas, construction, or transportation) the donor must be removed from duty immediately.

On average, the SAP evaluation process can cost between $400 to $500. Drug tests average between $30 to $60 dollars each. The minimum SAP and follow-up testing program can cost an employer or the driver, depending on the company policy of who pays for the program, to be at least $700 for the first year.

Upon confirmation of negative test results the employer may allow the employee to start performing safety-sensitive duties. The employer administers the follow-up testing plan at the direction of the SAP for a period of 12 months(minimum) to 60 months (maximum)

After failed DOT drug testing you will be restricted from your ability to perform safety-sensitive duties until you complete, and comply with your SAP's recommended treatment, attend a follow up SAP evaluation and produce a negative return-to-duty test.
