Abstract

This chapter examines how two Decadent writers, Rachilde (1860–1953) and Jean Lorrain (1855–1906), manipulated scandal for the purposes of self-promotion, creating alternative forms of solidarity based on the mutual construction of illicit media personae. It analyses a series of intertextual and journalistic exchanges from the mid-1880s, including a debate about women writers (or ‘bluestockings’) in a little magazine (petite revue) called Le Zig-Zag, and two quasi-biographical novellas (romans à clef) by their mutual friend, Oscar Méténier (1859–1913). Playing up to the ambiguities of their gender identity and sexuality, the pair adopted revealing promotional strategies associated with the bluestocking figure, which earned them criticism in turn. By analysing the authors’ textual performances alongside their correspondence, the chapter suggests that such tactics involved an element of risk, because the public revelation of private information, however playful or theatrical, exposes the vulnerability of those involved.
